Why Private Dance Lessons are Good for Your Health

Life is about movement, it is a dance that encompasses every aspect of what we are, where we come from, and who we want to be. So it’s fitting that one of the most powerful methods of expressing all of these different elements and feelings is dance itself.

Moving one’s body in expression is one of the most ancient, primal, and connected ways in which a person can relay a message, whether that message is going out to others in the form of a performance, or a message not meant for anyone else’s eyes, where it becomes one from the dancer to himself or herself, or to the world around them, to the universe. Whatever the case may be, the art of dance is one of the most beautiful acts of expression among our species.

A tradition of rhythmic movement through time
Since the birth of our species, when the first humans first began to move with purpose, there has been an element of dance. In fact the very first archeological evidence of humans expressing themselves in this way was discovered by way of cave paintings in India, that could be more than 9,000 years old. Now chances are that at that time, there were no formal private dance lessons being given to instruct our ancestors how to find the right steps and posture and balance, but part of the beauty of dance is its ability to evolve through time, cultures, varying sociopolitical climates, different factions of class and race, and with the evolution of music as well.

Dancing was used as a form of entertainment and in religious ceremonies in Ancient Egypt. Ballroom dancing has had a strong presence in many societies for centuries, and the term originates from the Latin ballare, which means “to dance.” Towards the end of the 17th century was when Louis XIV first founded the Academie Royale de Musique et de Danse, establishing set rules regarding specific ballroom dances. From there, a multitude of different types of dance have found their way into pop culture, to the point that it seems in today’s modern world, there is a new viral dance trend at least once a year. And now, ballroom dancing is an official Olympic Sport as well.

The many benefits of letting loose on the dance floor
There are so many reasons that so many people enjoy dancing. It certainly allows one to let loose and express in a way that perhaps no words could do. And while many people opt to take private dance lessons to improve their skill levels in certain types of dance, away from any judgmental eyes, there are times that it can be completely cathartic and therapeutic to just let your body move to the music free of the constraints of following particular steps.

Apart from that catharsis and therapy, there have been studies that prove there are health benefits to dancing as well. Regular dancing, whether on your own, in a class with others, or in a private dance lesson, provides a routine of consistent aerobic activity, which too many people do not devote enough time to. By sticking to a fitness routine such as regular dancing, a dedicated dancer can improve posture, cardiovascular health, balance, and flexibility, as well as maintaining a healthy weight, strengthening muscles and bones, and even reducing symptoms of anxiety disorders such as depression.

The list goes on and on. To top it all off, dancing in a class gives the perfect opportunity for social interaction and the chance to form new friendships, and it’s a fun way to get rid of tension and stress.

Everyone should feel free to let loose. But those who would prefer private dance lessons have their reasons. Perhaps it is a form of expression that they choose not to share. And there are those who secretly take private dance lessons to prepare for a momentous occasion or surprise, like performing a stunning wedding dance on their celebratory day. Whatever the reason may be that drives you to seek out a ballroom dance studio, or a hip hop dance class, or interpretive dance lessons, allow yourself to fully and freely enjoy every rhythmic step.
